A cultural immersion experience designed to reveal the living traditions of the Andes through authentic and meaningful encounters. Away from the region’s most visited routes, this journey offers the opportunity to connect with a local community, learn about ancestral knowledge, walk alongside alpacas and llamas, and enjoy a traditional Pachamanca prepared using age-old techniques.
Your experience begins with a private meeting with your guide at the hotel before setting out on a scenic drive toward Chinchero. Along the way, you will witness the beauty of the Andean landscape, where agricultural terraces, mountain peaks, and traditional villages reflect the enduring rhythm of life in the highlands.
Upon arrival in the community of Umasbamba, located in the Ñujchu sector, you will be welcomed by local hosts with traditional music and a warm cup of muña herbal tea. This first encounter sets the tone for a day dedicated to connecting with the living culture of the Andes.
You will then enjoy a gentle walk alongside the community’s alpacas and llamas, taking in the surrounding mountain scenery and the peaceful pace of local life. Throughout the visit, you will participate in a variety of activities that offer insight into regional traditions. These include a visit to the Aqha Wasi (traditional chicha house), an interactive presentation on native potato varieties, and introductions to bioconstruction techniques and the traditional use of medicinal plants.
You will also have the opportunity to observe a traditional weaving demonstration, where local artisans share techniques that have been passed down through generations.
A highlight of the day is the unveiling of the Pachamanca, a traditional meal slow-cooked underground using heated stones. More than a culinary experience, Pachamanca is an expression of gratitude to the earth and an opportunity to enjoy locally sourced ingredients prepared according to ancestral traditions.
At the end of the visit, you will return to Cusco carrying with you the memories, stories, and meaningful encounters that make this experience a genuine introduction to contemporary Andean culture.
The experience takes place between 3,760 and 3,900 meters (12,336–12,795 feet) above sea level in the highlands surrounding Chinchero.
Due to the altitude, all activities have been designed at a relaxed and accessible pace, allowing travelers to fully enjoy each part of the experience. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a warm muña infusion, and we recommend dressing in comfortable layers to adapt to the changing temperatures typical of the Andes.
Staying well hydrated throughout the day is also recommended.
Year-Round Availability
This experience operates throughout the year (January to December), as community activities and cultural interpretation programs continue year-round.
Rainy Season (January – March)
The experience continues to operate normally during the rainy season. During these months, the landscapes surrounding Chinchero become exceptionally green, creating beautiful conditions for photography and quiet appreciation of the Andean scenery.
Due to the variability of mountain weather, waterproof or wind-resistant outerwear and comfortable footwear with good traction are recommended for outdoor activities.
Advance Reservation
The preparation of the Pachamanca, coordination with host families, and logistical planning require reservations to be made at least 72 hours in advance.
Recommended Acclimatization
As the experience takes place above 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) above sea level, we recommend spending one to two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before participating. Proper acclimatization will help ensure greater comfort and enjoyment during the walks, cultural activities, and community interactions.
