From USD $884.69

Description

A high-altitude trekking experience in the southern Andes leading to one of Peru’s most striking landscapes. Pallay Punchu combines colorful geological formations, alpine lakes, and sweeping mountain views, revealing a lesser-known side of the Andes.

Itinerary

Your experience begins before sunrise with a private transfer from Cusco into the southern Andes. As the first light of day illuminates the landscape, you will pass through scenic valleys, traditional rural communities, and vast highland plains that define this remarkable region of Peru.

Your first stop is Quiquijana, where you will enjoy a local breakfast before continuing to Lake Layo, a tranquil body of water surrounded by mountains and open highland grasslands. Its peaceful setting provides an ideal opportunity for photography and quiet appreciation of the Andean landscape.

From here, you will begin the trek to Pallay Punchu, one of Peru’s most unique mountain formations. The trail gradually ascends through high-altitude terrain until reaching the mountain’s colorful ridgelines, which have made it one of the most extraordinary destinations in the region.

At the summit, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of multicolored mineral layers, dramatic peaks, and sweeping panoramas across the Andean plateau. The mountain’s distinctive formations resemble the intricate patterns of a traditional woven Andean textile, inspiring the name Pallay Punchu, often translated as “woven poncho.”

After enjoying the scenery and exploring the main viewpoints, you will descend and continue to Sicuani for lunch before returning to Cusco.

Availability & Operations

Recommended Season (May – October)

The dry season offers the best conditions for trekking, with greater weather stability, excellent visibility, and generally firmer, safer trails.

Not Recommended (January – March)

During the rainy season, trails can become slippery and visibility may be significantly reduced. Snowfall and hailstorms are also more likely at higher elevations.

Booking Notes

Advance Reservation

Due to the logistics required for operating a remote route such as Pallay Punchu, reservations should be made at least 5 days in advance to ensure the availability of transportation, specialized guides, and support services.

Recommended Acclimatization

As the hike takes place at nearly 4,800 meters (15,750 feet) above sea level and requires a moderate level of physical effort, we recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before undertaking the trek.
